Car Insurance

Car insurance is one of those types of insurance that everybody has to have; at least you do if you drive. In almost all areas car insurance is a legal requirement if you are going to be driving a car. That being said there are still a lot of decisions that have to be made when it comes to car insurance. There is a huge difference between having the minimum amount you are legally required to have and having the coverage that you need in order to make sure that you are adequately protected.

The car insurance that you are legally required to have is liability insurance, this is to protect other people in the event that you cause an accident. The minimum amount required by the government is usually not sufficient to provide you with adequate protection in the event that you cause a serious accident so you will likely want to have more coverage than that. A car accident can do some very serious damage, especially if somebody gets seriously injured. In this event you will likely be on the hook for far more than the minimum required insurance will cover, unless you have no assets you are probably going to want to have more insurance than this. Otherwise there is a good chance you will end up losing those assets when you get sued.

In addition to liability insurance there are some other types of car insurance that you are likely going to want to have. The most important is probably uninsured driver coverage. While everybody is supposed to have liability insurance when they are driving a disturbing number of people don't. Even if they do have coverage as mentioned above the minimum required amount is usually completely inadequate to cover the damage that can be done in a car accident. Uninsured driver coverage will protect you in the event that you are injured in an accident and the person who caused the accident doesn't have insurance or doesn't have enough insurance to cover the cost of your injuries. Given the number of people on the road with insufficient car insurance this is important coverage to have.

There is also the option of getting insurance to protect your car in the event that it gets damaged. You actually have a couple of options here; you can get collision insurance or comprehensive insurance. Collision will only cover you for damage that is caused in an accident while comprehensive insurance will provide coverage for most forms of damage, like theft, vandalism, or acts of nature. Given the fact that comprehensive insurance isn't that much more expensive than collision and that it provides so much more coverage it is usually a good idea to go with comprehensive coverage. In fact if you want to reduce your car insurance costs it would make more sense to go with comprehensive coverage with a higher deductible than collision insurance with a lower deductible. This will provide you with better coverage at a lower price.
